How flavors influence your daily life

You could be surprise how sense of smell influence your everyday choices, memories, or mood. Surround yourself with scent in conscious way, try to improve your environment and give yourself a chance to be carried by greatest scents in your daily journey.

Aroma & Memory

For some people it could be a big surprise, but it is actually smell sense which is the most connected with your memory. Smells are storage in our memory much better and longer than for example pictures or sounds. Our smells experience plays big role, on how we remembered specific places or events. I bet you not even once had such situation when you smell something and you backed to the past with your thoughts and had a feeling like it was yesterday. It could be granny kitchen, where she cooked your favorite dishes, a smell of a garden where you climbed the highest tree or maybe the smell  of a chocolate, which you gave to your first love. We very often don’t pay attention how important events from our live are connected with smell. This smell penetrates into our memory and remains in it, triggering memories whenever we feel it.

Aroma & Taste

The senses of smell and taste undoubtedly interact with each other and have a huge impact on each other. Taste buds are a collection of taste receptors that receive stimuli while eating and allow us to enjoy a food. However, if you do not smell, your ability to taste maybe impaired. When eating, the smell enters the nasal cavity, where it is processed. Recent scientific studies even indicate that olfactory receptors are also located on the tongue and it is there, and not in the brain as previously thought, that the interaction between these two senses occur. Smell provides important information about the quality of food, which is necessary for us to live. The brain combines the stimuli from these two senses and creates a taste.

Aroma & Emotions

Smell has a strong influence on the emotions that we feel every day, but these often determine how we perceive different situations, places or objects. Scientists have proved that this part of the brain, which is responsible for the sense of taste and smell is also part of the emotional brain, responsible for our personality. We communicate our emotions through smell. Having such knowledge we can influence our emotional state. We can use it to create comfortable atmosphere or if you want to find peace,  scent of lavender will be very helpful.

Aroma & Time

This maybe outstanding discover, but smell has an impact on our perception of time. Dr Alan Hirsh, neurologist and psychiatrist from Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, conducted a study in which participants were presented with the aroma of coffee, baby powder and no aroma. It turned out that the aroma of coffee caused a reduced perception of time, while the aroma of powder for babies caused a longer perception of time. Moreover survey shows, that some of the aroma affect the length of time customers spend in a store or casino which increased their chances of persuading interested parties to their services.

Aroma a concentration and productivity

There are some smells, which help us with focusing or learning process. Some increase our vigilance and thus also increase productivity. In Japan, in one of the office buildings distributed the smell of lemon oil. The effect of this experiment was to increase the productivity of employees entering data by 54%.  People who are tired and have difficulty concentrating are advised to smell rosemary or mint. They act excitingly and facilitate learning.
